StoryTime Adventures: Apple Farmer Annie

Something I have started doing with my kids is reading a book each week and pairing it with a craft or cooking activity we do together!  This has made story time more fun because they always want to know what we are going to do after and it is a lot of fun family time!
This week we read “Apple Farmer Annie” by Monica Wellington.  After reading the book we made an apple cake!
Sometimes cooking with little kids can be difficult so to make it easier and more fun for ALL of us I measure everything out before hand and put the ingredients into separate small bowls.  Then they each get to take a turn pouring that ingredient into the bowl and stirring the batter.
This is a really simple apple cake recipe and I would recommend a tart apple such as golden delicious for this cake, but really any kind of sweet apple will work great!
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup white sugar
1 egg, beaten
3 apples, peeled and chopped into small pieces
1 cup flour ( you can use wheat flour or if you want gluten free you can use your favorite gluten free mix)
1/4 tsp sea salt or kosher salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1.  Preheat the oven to 350.  Grease either 7-8 mini bread pans, a large bread pan, or an 8X8 pan.
2.  In a bowl mix butter and sugar.
3.  Add egg.
4.  Add apples.
5.  Add baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
6.  Add flour.
7. Mix well.
8.  Pour into baking dish and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
