I started making my own play dough for 2 reasons. First the store bought play dough can get expensive when you have play dough playing addicted children and also one of my little munchkins tends to try to each everything. So I didn’t want my little cutie gobbling up mystery ingredients in the store bought stuff! This way I know what is in it and it is not costing me my retirement to entertain them on all the snowy/raining/hot/cold days of the year!
2 cup flour
2 cup water
1/2 cup salt
4 tsp cream of tartar
2 Tbsp oil
1. Mix all ingredients except the food coloring into a saucepan.
2. Heat on medium heat until a dough has formed. It’s starts as pure liquid, then becomes more like mashed potatoes, and finally becomes a ball of dough.
3. Remove from heat and turn it out onto a counter after it has cooled for several minutes.
4. Add a few drops of food coloring to the center of the dough and knead the dough until the coloring is throughout the play dough!
I usually store it in a freezer bag and it keeps for weeks and weeks staying nice and soft to play with! In fact I dare say it is softer and easier to play with than the store bought stuff!!
